Shawn Eugene Leasure, 40, of Delaware, Ohio (formerly of Summerfield and Caldwell, Ohio) passed away Monday, May 29, 2017 in Delaware County, Ohio following a kayaking accident.

He was born April 10, 1977 in Wheeling, West Virginia a son of Jack McQueary who survives of New Martinsville, West Virginia and Kandi Leasure McQueary who survives of Marietta, Ohio.

Shawn attended Caldwell High School, Caldwell, Ohio and studied Culinary Management from St. Clair College.  He was a manager trainee for Burger King in Lewis Center, Ohio.

Shawn and a friend were looking for adventure on a beautiful Memorial Day afternoon.  They had spent a few hours kayaking at the Alum Creek Reservoir just south of Routes 36/37 in Delaware County in Delaware, Ohio.  What began as a fun outing on the water ended with a tragedy. Shawn became a "hero" that day as he threw his own safety aside to help his friend whose kayak had capsized.  He ended up in the water himself and drug the friend to safety near a  large rock.  However, since using all of his strength to save his friend, he did not have the strength to save himself.

Shawn was blessed with artistic talent.  He enjoyed creating many beautiful drawings, cooking, making desserts and being around his nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by four aunts, Irene (Ronnie) Tidd of Newport, Ohio, Darlene (Rodney) Bettinger of Caldwell, Ohio, Debbie Williams of Marietta, Ohio, Mechele (Rodney) Nichols of Beverly, Ohio; half-sister, Vada McQueary of Woodsfield, Ohio; half-brother, Jay McQueary of Bridgeport, Ohio; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Junior and Hester Leasure who helped raise Shawn; two aunts, Joyce Goff and Donna Ralph; paternal grandmother, Elsie Popp; half-sister, Jacqulyn McQueary; and half-brother, J.P. McQueary.

There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Mt. Tabor Cemetery near Summerfield, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to Darlene Bettinger, 40070 Bettinger Ridge Road, Caldwell, Ohio 43724.
