Ruth V. Spence, 97, of Caldwell, Ohio (formerly of Summerfield and Norwich, Ohio) passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell, Ohio.

She was born near Calais, Ohio on November 1, 1919 a daughter of the late Oliver J. and Civilla Carpenter.

Ruth was a homemaker; a1937 graduate of the former Summerfield High School, Summerfield, Ohio; and was a member of the East Union United Methodist Church, East Union, Ohio. She did war work during World War II, and later worked in social work and retail at Grays in Caldwell, Ohio. On her 90th birthday she dressed in leather and rode on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.  Ruth was perhaps best known for her quilting. She taught many people how to quilt and made master pieces for many others.  The last several years of her life she was active in Quilts of Valor and made nearly 100 quilts for that program. After moving to Summit Acres, Ruth made quilts for fellow residents and employees. Ruth excelled at making personal connections with the people she met and could tell you how their lives intertwined with hers.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James P. Spence (whom she married on December 20, 1937) who died on April 26, 1994;  daughter, Kay; a sister, Virginia; six brothers, John Wesley, Morrie, Fern, Carson "Jack", Monoah "Noah", David, J. Oliver "Whitey" Carpenter, and Jimmy Wells.

Ruth is survived by her sister, Mary Tilton of Caldwell, Ohio, sister-in-law Virginia Carpenter of Gahanna, Ohio; son-in-law Lynn Elliott and his wife Judy of New Concord, Ohio; granddaughters, Rachel (J) Hodge, Rebecca Elliott, Deborah Elliott, Stacey (Matt) Russell; Stephanie (Mike) Hess; great grandchildren, Elaina Kay and Braden Hodge, Michael Komarov, Madeline Russell and Elizabeth Hess; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Per her wishes a caring cremation has taken place and no calling hours will be observed. A private burial will be held at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, near Carlisle, Ohio where Ruth will be laid to rest next to her husband. The family will hold a Celebration of Life service at a time to be announced, at College Drive Presbyterian Church, New Concord, Ohio and invites friends to bring a special picture or quilt Ruth made to share. Contributions in her honor and memory may be made to the Quilts of Valor Foundation, P.O. Box 191, Winterset, IA 50273.
