Donald Longwell Obituary

Donald L. Longwell, 71, of Woodsfield, Ohio passed away Thursday, December 16, 2021 at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio after heart surgery.

He was born in New Martinsville, W. Va. on July 11, 1950 a son of the late Bernard Franklin Longwell and Delphia Adaline Childers Longwell.

Don was an Independent Insurance Agent for 38 years and owned the F. W. Schumacher Agency in Woodsfield, Ohio.  He was a 1968 graduate of River High School and attended West Liberty College studying history.  He loved history and politics.

Don was an avid supporter of his community with an emphasis on the Youth of Monroe County.

He served as president of his High School Senior Class and continued that title as a President of the Woodsfield Kiwanis, Board of Trade, MACO Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Monroe Central Sideliners for many years.

Don led the way for many projects at the Monroe Memorial Park and helped build the Jay Circosta Fieldhouse, new bleachers, fencing around the field and was instrumental in adding the handicapped viewing ramp.

He was a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, Loyal Order of Moose, Woodsfield Ohio, Monroe Lodge 189 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite, Osiris Shrine Temple, Alladin Shrine Temple, Fraternal Order of Eagles and served on the Board of Directors of Dapper Dan.  He received the Robert S. McKelvey Memorial Award in 2004.  He was a founding member of the River Alumni Association where he served as its first president for 3 years.

Don was an avid animal lover and owned a hobby farm North of Woodsfield where he was honored by being selected Ohio Valley Cattlemen’s Association “Father of the Year” in 1994.

Don’s grandsons were the light of his life.  He supported Monroe Central Football until his oldest grandson graduated and returned to his Alma Mater RHS to follow his youngest grandson in both basketball and football.  There is nothing he would not do for these boys.

Don never knew a stranger, always smiled from ear to ear and always had a quick wit.  And as a business man he saw success because he ran his business as he ran his life, putting others first!

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Pamela Tisher Longwell; two sons Matthew Ryan Longwell of Woodsfield, Ohio, Brian Franklin (Shelley) Longwell of Woodsfield, Ohio; his brother Dennis (Susie) Longwell of New Martinsville, W.Va.; and twin brother Ronald (Vicki) Longwell of Sardis, Ohio; two special grandsons Branden Franklin Longwell; Broderic Matthew Longwell both of Woodsfield, Ohio; two special nieces and two special nephews.
