James c. Mercer Jr.

     James C. Mercer Jr., 78, of Jerusalem, Ohio passed away Wednesday April 7, 2021 at the Genesis Hospital,  Zanesville, Ohio.

     He was born at Calais, Ohio on November 1, 1942 a son of the late James C. Mercer Sr. and Ocie Paulina Carpenter Mercer.

     Jim was a retired coal miner for Ohio Valley Coal Co., Alledonia,  Ohio and was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ, Woodsfield, Ohio.  He was also a member of the U.M.W.A. Local 1810, Alledonia, Ohio.

     He enjoyed watching his purple martins, woodworking, hunting, fishing, his love of beagle dogs and was a great outdoorsman.  He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven sisters, Bonnie Egger, Martha Lou Betts, Betty Mercer, Opal Mercer, Nancy Crum, Lodena Christman and Emma Bates; three brothers, Samuel Donald Mercer, Oscar Ellis Mercer and Joseph Rolland Mercer.

     Surviving are his wife, Betty Ault Mercer whom he married on November 20, 1971; two sons Gregory (Annette) Mercer of Woodsfield, Ohio; James “J.C.” Mercer III of Barnesville, Ohio.  four grandchildren Emily (Jarod) Mellinger, Chase Mercer, Pacyn Mercer and Daylin Mercer; three great grandchildren Ariah, Avah and Axel Mellinger and  a special niece, Bonnie Mercer Brooks of Barnesville, Ohio.

     Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio from 11:00 a.m.  until time of services at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2021 with Kim McFarland, Scott McFarland and Keith Jones officiating.

     Burial will follow in the Calais Cemetery, Calais, Ohio.

     Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodsfield Church of Christ, 860 Lewisville Road, Woodsfield, Ohio.

     In keeping with COVID-19 mandates, face masks and social distancing will be required at the visitation and funeral services.
