Maynard A. Johnson, 76, of Jerusalem, Ohio passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at the WVU Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, West Virginia.
He was born at Medina, Ohio on November 9, 1946 a son of the late James and Gay Shrieves Johnson.
He was a retired coal miner for the former Ohio Valley Coal Company. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during the Vietnam War. He was a life member of the American Legion 768, Beallsville, Ohio and the V.F.W Post 5303, Woodsfield, Ohio.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, barbequing, making stories, playing cards, watching westerns, woodworking, and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Johnson; a brother, Edward Johnson; three sisters, Mary Ann Johnson, Eva Gay, and Glada Quick; and two sons-in-law, William Simmons and David McCleary.
Surviving are his wife, Rosa Kahrig Johnson whom he married on January 3, 1993; two daughters, Tamelia Simmons of Bridgeport, Ohio and Melissa McCleary of Bethesda, Ohio; one brother, James “Fred” (Julie) Johnson of Quaker City, Ohio; three sisters, Jannet Yoho of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Lela (Bill) Stacy of Salesville, Ohio, Olive Larrison of Miamisburg, Ohio; six grandchildren, Chelce (James), Amber, Joshua (Lilly), Miranda, Antonia, and Latasha; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; former spouse and friend, Donna Slevin of Bridgeport, Ohio; and a special friend, Shawn Penyak.
A private funeral and military service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Johnson Family cemetery near Jerusalem, Ohio, with Anthony McSwords officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Ohio.
